Desmond Egan’s Enriching Legacy Continues with New Poetry Collection “LAPTOP”
Noted Irish poet Desmond Egan, acclaimed for his substantial contribution to Irish literature, proudly launched his latest work, “LAPTOP” last night (18th Sep) at the Silver Restaurant at Newbridge Silverware. The book was officially launched by the distinguished film actor, Barry McGovern who is also a world-famous interpreter of Samuel Beckett. Newbridge Silverware generously sponsored the launch which was attended by fans of the poet’s work, media and friends.
Born in Athlone, County Westmeath, Desmond Egan has been a pivotal figure in the Irish literary scene, publishing 24 collections of poetry and revered translations of Sophocles’ “Philoctetes” and Euripides’ “Medea.” His poetry, resonating beyond Irish shores, has been translated into more than 25 languages including Swedish, French, German, Chinese, and Russian, among others. Egan’s profound narratives and his dedication to cultural enrichment have solidified his status both nationally and internationally and he is regarded as the ‘most translated contemporary Irish poet’.
The “LAPTOP” collection features four interconnected sections that showcase a rich diversity of themes—from the tranquillity of nature to the dynamic shifts of contemporary society, to the transience and vulnerability of humans. Each piece reflects Egan’s nuanced understanding of the human condition, underpinned by his signature blend of humour and poignancy. The collection’s cover, adorned with an artwork by Mark Rothko, highlights a specific poem about Rothko that received admiration from the artist’s son, emphasising the deep interconnection between the visual and literary arts in Egan’s work.
Egan’s career began after his academic pursuits at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, and University College Dublin. He edited the arts magazine “Era,” and since 1987, has served as the artistic director of the Gerard Manley Hopkins International Festival in Kildare. His commitment to the arts extends through his role in education and his continuous engagement with multiple languages and cultures.
This collection is a must-have for aficionados of profound literary works and admirers of Egan’s earlier poetry. Available in all good bookshops or from Goldsmith Press Ltd., Newbridge, €20.
